MK Ultra Background Info

“MK Ultra is the solo project of Travis Szendrei. Szendrei performs vocals, and is a multi-instrumentalist who writes and records the material. Aaron Bagley, who Szendrei met when he was just learning music, is the producer along with Szendrei of the upcoming debut album titled, “Documentation.”

“The music of MK Ultra is much different as it is fueled by raw emotion from life events Szendrei has experienced since moving to Los Angeles. The sound is best described dreamy, ambient, indie, pop all compiled into his most emotional record to date.”

MarsBands Review

MK Ultra is sort of a Electro/Pop/Rock combination that caught me off guard. That’s the thing about labels, I guess. When you see a band or musician labeled as Pop or Rock, you immediately create an idea what they will sound like without ever hearing them. Listening to the debut album, “Documentation”, from MK Ultra was nothing that I expected.

Imagine a more Poppy, Electro version of The Front Bottoms mixed with a hint of Nine Inch Nails combined with a whisper of melancholy. Travis has a unique voice that is as captivating as it is unique. Brilliant harmony with a scratchy voice was more than enough to keep me interested.

My favorite song from Documentation was Killing Angels. Starting off with a jungle-esque drum roll, the song builds with slow, deliberate lyrics and an ominous beat. The chorus is an excellent example of the true power of Travis’ vocals. As the song continues it gets louder, more forceful and crescendos back into the chorus with gripping vocal exclamations. And then as softly as it began, the song was over, leaving me scrambling to turn on repeat.

And while Killing Angels was by far my favorite song, some other songs I really enjoyed were Welcome To The Pharmacy and Here Comes the Flood. The thing I loved most about Documentation was that you could literally feel the power of each and every lyric. The songs weren’t just thrown together happenstance. Each lyric is deliberate and made me want to know all the details about each song.

MK Ultra’s Documentation is a mixed bag of emotions. Clearly defined by his personal experiences, Travis creates music that is enthralling to the listener.
