MarsBands Review
When you listen to Marla Mase you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time. She has a lot of songs for your listening pleasure on ReverbNation. But as you all know, around here, it’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. Marla Mase is the very essence of quality. So how would I define the music of Marla Mase?
Honestly, I am having a tough time with that. It’s Rocky, but there’s also some Funk in there (note the awesome use of the wah pedal). Marla Mase is a smörgåsbord of musical genres. If you take a look at some of her influences (Patti Smith, Talking Heads and Iggy Pop, to be specific) you’ll begin to understand things a little better.
Of course, then you hear a song like “AnnaRexia” and you just go… “Reggae, huh? Is there anything she won’t do?” And then you hear the song “Rocking Hot Mase“, and it’s at that point you realize that it’s impossible to categorize Marla Mase as anything other than just simply, music. Marla Mase is not afraid to stray from her comfort zone (although, it would appear every genre is within her comfort zone). From Rock to Soft Rock to Rap Rock (think Beastie Boys) to Reggae to Folky to Poppy, Marla Mase will do it all and thoroughly impress you in the process.
Marla Mase is not normal. And no, that is certainly not a bad thing. In fact, that’s what makes Marla Mase so special. You won’t hear a band on the radio switching genres - their record label would have a fit! Marla Mase laughs in the face of standards and sets her own. Like a Hippy, the free spirit of Marla Mase will drift anywhere. And fortunately for us listeners, we get to tag along on the ride.
What’s even better than having great music that is catchy, harmonic, and melodic is having fantastic lyrics and messages to compliment that music. Marla Mase, aside from being a highly skilled singer/songwriter/musician, is an activist. She is an activist for many different topics and subjects - running the gamut from women’s rights to peace to mental health. Not only are you being musically educated, you are being educated about life as well.
Take a look at that picture of Marla up at the top of this review. You see that? Do you see that primal, animalistic, raw, exposed passion in her face and eyes? That’s not an act, that’s not some Pop star trying to seduce you. That’s brutal honesty and remarkable intelligence saying “Listen to me, God dammit! Open your eyes!”
Quite simply, Marla Mase is real. Marla Mase is truth. And quite honestly, I think that scares a lot of people. They don’t want to hear the truth or reality because it can often be uncomfortable. When you listen to Marla Mase, you’re going to have to pull your head out of the sand and see and think about things as they really are. Marla’s not afraid to do it, and you shouldn’t be, either. So turn the music up loud, spread it among all your friends, and tell everyone you meet about Marla Mase!
