MarsBands Review
Now obviously from MarsBands’ perspective April Smith and the Great Picture Show is the model group of musicians. They self-released their album, Songs For A Sinking Ship (with the help from their fans), have impeccable skills, and sound great. See, people, going at it on your own may not be easy, but it can be done. And if your results end up as good as they have been for April Smith and the Great Picture Show, you can be certain you are on the right track. What a spectacular group this is!
April Smith and the Great Picture Show have no comparisons, at least none that immediately jump into my head. The sounds, harmonies, and melodies this group of musical geniuses make are unique, creative, exciting, and upbeat. April Smith’s voice ranks right up there with some of the best I’ve ever heard, including Allison Crowe. And coming from me, that is high praise. I regard Allison’s voice as the best of the best, but April Smith, I think, could give her a run for her money. April can hit any note she chooses - high, low, higher, or lower.
April Smith sounds just as good live as she does in her recorded versions. In fact, I prefer her live stuff because it gives you a greater appreciation for her voice. Anybody can sound good recorded, but when she starts belting out notes that no mere mortal should be able to sing, you know without a doubt that she is amazing.
As far as the music goes, you are in for a real treat. If you are a fan of instruments, April Smith and the Great Picture Show will satisfy all your wants. Aside from using a wide range of instruments - including but not limited to trumpet, accordion, violin, guitar, bass, drum, piano - these people are masters of their instruments. They play them as though they were a part of their body, with such skill and precision it may bring a tear to your eye.
Colors is a great song, as is Bright White Jackets, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Can’t Say No, but my favorite is Terrible Things. The video is even better. Well, maybe not better, but it’s really awesome.
