Adele Flips the Bird Over 15 Seconds of Fame
So I’m sure you’ve all heard it and seen it by now. Adele gives the finger to the “suits” after her acceptance speech for British Album of the Year at the Brit Awards was cut short. And now apparently there are a few ways people are looking at this:
Adele gave her fans the finger
This scenario seems highly unlikely. But there are people out there who say that’s what she was doing. I don’t care how high and mighty she thinks she is, I don’t believe she would commit social suicide by telling all her fans to fuck off. It’s not like she is Brody from the now defunct Distillers; Adele absolutely cannot get away with something like that. Not to mention that she really doesn’t seem the type to do something like that (despite the fact that she apparently has a rather untamed side to her).
Adele gave “the suits” the finger
This scenario seems much more likely. She had just won an award and was ready to play up her fans with thank you’s and thanking God and how she couldn’t have done it without them and all that gushing crap. And then her 15 seconds of fame was literally turned into 15 seconds when she got cut off. She was pissed. So she gave the executives and producers a little gesture that expressed her disdain. Whoopdy-doo.
Here’s what I find interesting and would like to have you think about as you go about your day:
Say hello to my little friend!
The Bon Iver Connection
When Bon Iver told the Grammy’s “thanks, but no thanks”, people came out saying how awesome the band was for telling the Grammy’s to suck it. I will admit, I was one of those people. What can I say, I’m a sucker for people telling mainstream music to screw off. But then there was also a segment of people who said that Bon Iver was having a “diva” moment and that perhaps Justin Vernon was feeling a little too big for his britches.
So, where are those people now? I mean, sure, Adele won an award. The ritual is to get up and kiss people’s ass and give out some thank you’s. It’s not like she didn’t have the opportunity to accept previous awards and get up and give a mushy thank you speech. She got cut off during her acceptance speech and she flipped the bird. Honestly, not that big of a deal, but the message that she gave with her finger and the message that Bon Iver gave were essentially the same thing: Fuck you. So why aren’t we hearing a bunch of people complaining about Adele having a “diva” moment?
Time is of the Essence
And something else for you to ponder, why did she get so mad at the execs and producers anyway? I mean, it’s not like the “suits” were planning to screw her over. It was a live event. They are on a pretty tight schedule. As we all know, time is money. If Adele should have been mad at anybody, or more accurately, anything, she should be mad at time. She should be flipping the bird to time, not to the “suits” because even that doesn’t make sense. What are they supposed to do, somehow freeze or slow time so she can give an acceptance speech? Adele may be the bee’s knees, but for every second over schedule the executives and producers are, that’s some big money being shelled out. And though it may hurt to hear, Adele isn’t worth it.
So my conclusion? Was Adele giving her fans the finger? No, and if you think that, you’re insane. Was she giving the “suits” the finger? Absolutely. Was that finger and it’s statement justified? Nope. I think she was having a “diva” moment. I get wanting to thank people, but I bet they really don’t care. If she doesn’t thank them, even on purpose, do you think that will have any noticeable repercussions? Besides, she could have just smiled and walked away and then taken to her website and told her fans thank you and blah, blah, blah all while making the Awards people look and feel like a bunch of scoobs. After all, isn’t that what the internet is for? I feel like this whole situation is a little overblown, I mean, we’re talking about fingers here people. But since it’s apparently such a big deal, there’s my two cents.
What do you think? Were the “suits” out to get her?
Does Adele’s not thanking you make you reconsider liking/buying her music?
Do you even care?
Lemme have it in the comments.
