The Rundown: From Johannesburg, South Africa, comes Dear Reader. Formerly made up of Cherilyn MacNeil and Darryl Torr, the two parted ways in 2010. After the split, Cherilyn moved to Berlin to record the album Idealistic Animals. When on tour, Cherilyn MacNeil is accompanied by Jean-Louise Nel, Martin Wenk, Jacob Lind, Erik Sunbring, and Caoimhe McAlister. Dear Reader has released three studio albums:

  • The Younger (2006)
  • Replace Why with Funny (2009)
  • Idealistic Animals (2011)
Dear Reader makes music that is soft, sweet at times and a little bitter at others, introspective and retrospective. Cherilyn MacNeil does a wonderful job of writing lyrics, and an even better job of singing them. She has a very sweet and subdued voice, and at times I get the feeling that she is holding back too much. I would love to hear her really open up just to see what she is truly capable of. Much of Dear Reader’s music is performed on acoustic guitar, with a few songs containing a distorted guitar. Some songs are also accompanied by violins and piano.

My favorite songs from Dear Reader are Out Out Out, Dearheart, and Elephant (Heart). Dear Reader’s songs are full of passion and Cherilyn lays out all her thoughts and feelings in her lyrics. MarsBands.com strongly suggests that you check out Dear Reader.
