* Warning* This band could be harmful to your health. They are so freaking sweet, it could kill you. Proceed with caution.
The Rundown: The Smittens are what the kiddos nowadays like to call Twee. Starting up on a whim at a 2002 party among friends, The Smittens are Max Andrucki, Colin Clary, Dana Kaplan, Holly Chagnon, and David Zacharis. The best way to describe the band is like this:
Imagine the sweetest thing you can possibly eat. Then add 2 cups of sugar to it and imagine eating that super sweet whatever while watching that video of that baby that laughed hysterically when paper was ripped.
I think they literally want to kill you with kindness.
The Smittens have released three albums: “Gentelfication Now!” (2004), “A Little Revolution” (2005), and “The Coolest Thing About Love” (2008).
The Smittens have a pretty unique sound. Driven by harmony and simple, catchy riffs, at times The Smittens sound like something you’d hear from the 60s, like their song “Baby Don’t You Know”. One of the great things about this band is the number of instruments they incorporate into their sound. In addition, each member isn’t necessarily assigned a specific instrument, as they tend to switch it up, along with who takes the lead on vocals.
I’ll be honest. I wasn’t sure what the hell Twee was, so I had to look it up. Then I wondered if that word was made up just to describe this band. MarsBands.com suggests the next time you are super pissed about something, maybe give this band a listen. They just might cheer you up.
