Acappella Week , Day 1
So in case you missed it, all the bands we put up this week will follow a theme. This week’s theme is Acappella. If you don’t know what Acappella is, well, you will know it and love it quite possibly by the end of today, but certainly by the end of the week.
Some folks like to call it A Cappella, some like myself like to combine it as Acappella. I’m not sure that it’s that big of a deal, because any way you spell it, it’s awesome music.
Acappella is music without instruments. This is no child’s game. If you can’t sing, you have no place in Acapella, as there’s no instruments to hide behind. Only the best of the best need apply.
That being said, MarsBands.com starts things off with, arguably, the best of the best - The Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones. This student-run group was co-founded back in 1985 by, most notably, Mira Sorvino. Now, obviously, the lineup is constantly changing, as you can’t stay in college forever. So here is the current Veritones lineup (name, class of, additional info):
Sopranos
Kaitlin Terry ’12, President, MG Prezioso ’13, Social Chair, Lucy Walsh ’15
Mezzos
Annie Mitran ’13, CD Manager, Gargi Chaudhuri ’14, Music Director,
Altos
Sandy Uwimana ’14, Business Manager, Gillian Stein ’15, Sophia Wennstedt ’15,
Tenors
Dan Masterson ’12, Alumni Coordinator, Digital Manager, William Horton ’15
Baritones
Michael Caldwell ’13, Anise Molina ’14, Asst. Music Director
Basses
Henry Mumford ’13, Steve Burke ’14, Doug Evans ’15
One of the things Acappella groups often do is cover songs that you know and love. The Veritones are no exception, as they sing a plethora of songs ranging from today’s current Pop to the classics of yesteryear. The videos below that you are going to watch (you are going to watch them, aren’t you?) are from the 2008-2010ish timeframe, so there are some videos showing previous Veritones.
In addition to blowing you away with amazing singing, The Veritones also provide a bit of comedic entertainment in their presentation. If you have a family and happen to be within close proximity to one of the Veritone’s performances, this is definitely a family event. All the aforementioned being said, prepare to be amazed at how good real singing can actually be. MarsBands.com gives the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones our seal of approval.
