The Rundown: The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are from Denmark. The band began to achieve notoriety when Apple used their song, “Around the Bend” for an iPod commercial in 2008 while their song, “The Golden Age“, was featured on a Heineken commercial in 2011. The lead singer of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is Mette Lindberg. Accompanying her are Miloud Carl Sabri (trumpet), Sven Meinild (saxophone), Mads Brinch Nielsen (guitar), and Rasmus Valldorf (drums). Since forming in 2007, the band has released one studio album, “Fruit“.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, despite being used by both Apple (iPod Touch) and Heineken (Beer) for their commercials, are still mostly unknown in America. Their album, Fruit, had several exceptional songs on it, such as “The Sun Ain’t Shining No More“, “Crazy“, “The Golden Age“, “Around the Bend“, and “Bad Fever“. It’s hard for me to decide which of their songs I like the most, as they also do some pretty awesome cover songs, like “The Safety Dance” (Men Without Hats, 1982). While the original song wasn’t really my cup of tea, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour version is a little faster, less 80s, and more pop. Plus, Mette could probably sing anything and it would sound awesome just because of her voice.

Mette has a voice which reminds me of a chipmunk who inhaled a massive breath of helium, or perhaps that of a small child. Either way, it is fairly unique. When she sings in Around the Bend, that childlike sound seems to disappear a little bit and is replaced with a 70s style mind-tripping sound. There are several songs The Asteroids Galaxy Tour has that make me wonder if perhaps they think this is still 1970. That’s not to say that those songs aren’t good, in fact, those are some of my favorite songs.

Their album, Fruit, seems to mix a few different genres into one. It is a little jazzy, a little “rock” (and I use that term loosely because the actual word I want to use is non-existent), perhaps a little bluesy, and a definitely trippy at times. It is an excellent combination. Especially in the song Around the Bend.

Around the Bend starts off as every song should; with the cowbell! That’s what’s wrong with today’s music, it needs MORE COWBELL! I digress. After the cowbell, the song starts into a trumpet and bass (and some kind of techno-bass type thinger) intro which quickly yields to Mette and her, almost, seductive and stoned-out-of-her-mind singing style (which is unique to this song, she doesn’t sound like that in all her songs). It is fantastic. You should really watch the video embedded in the band profile box. You will understand everything then. The trumpet and saxophone give this song that little extra “umph”.

Mette Lindberg being awesome and such

Another song of theirs that I am quite fond of is “The Sun Ain’t Shining No More“. While the cowbell is missing, the song still has quite a personality to it. I’m actually having a hard time coming up with words to describe it. The guitar is sharp, as if they cranked the treble up full-blast, and the drums play a prominent role, as there isn’t any horns in this song. Mette’s singing style is once again unique. This song is quite bluesy and perhaps a tad jazzy. The video for this song is also something I am fond of. It isn’t like the “Around the Bend“, where everything is all trippy, but this video certainly gives off a 60s or 70s type vibe.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour may not be a common household name, yet, but I am pretty sure as time goes on, they will become a lot more popular. This is one of my favorite bands now, not only because of the sound, but because of how Mette is as a person. You can get on YouTube and search for interviews that she has done and she seems quite genuine, very friendly, and also seems to be extremely happy with the world.
